Manoj--thanks for a real nice trick with the "dpkg-deb --contents"--I had no idea this would output the default file modes, owners, etc! Now I'm just wondering if dpkg can reinstall dpkg (reinstall itself?), to get back to that happy like-new state? After that, I'll be looking for the culprit that changed my dpkg permissions to begin with.
