Read the release notes and the installation manual. I only attempted it once on my 486 (Woody > Sarge >> Etch). The upgrade died while libc6 was being unpacked which trashed the whole system. Since the box doesn't have enough ram to run either Etch or Sarge's installer, I'm trying out the BSDs on it. My other box is/was new and sarge wouldn't work on it so it started with Etch a few months ago. Part of the answer lies in: what kind of box processor, memory, video card. what do you use it for router, server, workstation.
