I should have said this before but I have done that, several times. The first entry in all the color depths is 1280x960, but the system won't display anything more than 1024x768. The X mailing list has no complaints about resolution, so I suspect its a case of this particular monitor/card combo. I'm running an Intel MB with on-board video ( the I810 driver ). Looking through the x.org log I noticed several repeats of the "supported vesa modes, followed by DDC modes, followed by rejected modes. I don't know whats going on with that. Guess I'll file a bug if I can find my way around the somewhat convoluted bug system Debian is using (or maybe my brain is just inadequate).
