smartmontools tell me that this drive doesn't support SMART. the
clicking occurs irregularly (i mean it starts irregularly and it is not
reproducible), but then the clicking itself is very regular and persists
until the reboot. the drive is usually idle when clicking starts, some
activity (e.g., updatedb) stops it for some moments, but then it occurs
again.
it usually starts when the notebook is on ac, i'm not sure whether it
happened also on battery.
i recall trying the hdparm -B trick, but i think it didn't work :(
