Indeed, this is one of those "known" problems. The xserver-xorg-core maintainers closed my ticket, Bug#420523, since someone else on this list stated that by downgrading the xserver-xorg-core package the nvidia driver worked again, and in closing the ticket said "It's not an xorg problem. You'll just have to wait until someone updates the nvidia driver." Someone else said that the experimental driver worked, but I am just running the nv driver until, as it was so gently put, "someone" updates something.
