Florian, That works. I get four pages, with "word 1" on the first page, "word 2a" on the second page, etc. It's so simple that I am embarrassed. I became disoriented in my attempt to get xindy running and to follow the examples in the xindy tutorial. While some of the features of xindy would be useful to me, makeidx takes care of my basic needs and is adequate until such time as xindy is packaged for Debian and properly documented.
