Yes, it is called automount. It consists of two parts, the autofs kernel
driver (included in vanilla kernels, at least in version 2.4) and the
autofs daemon. You tell the daemon where to mount your devices, and set
your desktop icons to those directories. When accessed, the daemon will
automatically mount the devices and also unmount them after a given
timeout.
