Ah; so X is starting, but it has no clients to run. You can either
reinstall whatever clients are missing (probably a window manager, such
as fluxbox or icewm, or an environment, such as KDE or Gnome). I'd
probably do something like "aptitude install kde" to get/restore the KDE
environment.
Do you have anything else in "~/.xinitrc"? If so, those things are not
being found by X; if not, X is not finding your previous default
wm/environment.
