Unfortunately, the belief is fostered by the big companies. There is a saying in English, "You get what you pay for". The same saying is in Dutch as well, "Goedkoop is duurkoop" which translates to: Cheap is expensive. Sayings like these just reinforce the idea that free software is worthless. Let them think so, and companies can use GPL code to make money. Several are already doing so.
