I have an HP PSC 1610 printer / scanner. The printer was connected by USB to another machine on my home network, and I could print to it happily from my own box. That machine went down, so I connected the printer by USB to my own box.
Installed the printer by using the CUPS browser interface and printed a test page from the CUPS browser interface without any difficulty. Then my problems started. Foomatic-gui sees the printer but will not print a test page. Apps such as Abiword and Gnumeric do not see the printer at all. a2ps <filename> (as root) gives me : [filename (plain): 1 page on 1 sheet] /usr/bin/lp: Error - scheduler not responding! [Total: 1 page on 1 sheet] sent to the default printer lp -c <filename> (as root) gives me : /usr/bin/lp: Error - scheduler not responding! cupsd is running as : 120:root 13730 0.0 0.8 6628 2212 ? Ss 12:47 0:00 /usr/sbin/cupsd and has been restarted repeatedly. The scanner is now working perfectly, but nothing from the printer except CUPS test pages. Help would be very very welcome.
