Why can't tar handle a wildcard list like that? > well the -f option takes 1 argument. you gave it more than one. tar xjf * becomes: tar xjf a.tar.bz2 b.tar.bz2 ..... the 2nd,3rd,4th,... arguments become 'filenames to extact'. These dont exist. see 'man tar' for more.
