Thanks for the suggestions everybody. I have quite specific backup
requirements (a very large and mostly static resource) so I was just
looking to see if anyone had already found the optimum solution for
dealing with it.

As there doesn't seem to be a bespoke solution and I'll be probably be
doing the backup over a period of several days, I think I'll work out
a CLI solution with "dar".

I'm not sure how differential backups will work later when I'll have
ten or so dvds to test against or if I have to create every 4gig
"slice" at the same time. I suppose the ideal solution would be a
program which created an index I could test against and backup
different portions of at a later time.

Thanks again,

c

Hi,
I'm looking to backup my mp3 collection (50gig or so) to dvds. I'll
have to tar it all because some of the filenames are too long and a
few have strange accents.

What would people suggest is the best way to go about doing this? I
guess I need to find the best way of creating a series of correctly
sized tar files from the directory tree I'm targetting. Does anyone
know of any scripts or a program that can do this?

Thanks,

c
