Personally I would not buy a (contemporary) color printer under about US$2000 -
in my opinion they are never worth the money. Until recently I would never
have bought a monotone laser printer for under $600 - but there seem to be good
ones now for about $400. On the other hand, I'm much more choosy than most
people because I'm pretty serious about the print quality on documents I
produce.
