.. also make sure that the fonts that are displayed are the ones you think. This bit me once after installing msttcorefonts .. the gtk fonts I was seeing were not 'verdana' as I _thought_ I had specified but something else. I remember installing the unneeded gnome desktop to get to the bottom of this one. IIRC -- what was happening was that for some reason, the gtk apps were not finding my specified font(s) and falling back to the "something else".
