minimal files needed for USB install

I am a novice at Linux and was reading on how to use a USB drive for basic 
boot. The installation info is pretty nice except that i could not find the 
few basic files needed. I found a copy of the syslinux file but could not 
find the syslinux.cfg file nor the vmlinuz and initrd.gz file. I was also 
looking for the boot.image.gz file which I couldn't find either. It would be 
nice if someone would add a link under the usb installation doc file - 
http://www.debian.com/releases/stable/i386/ch04s04.html.en - whwere a novice 
like me can download the minimal files, copy them to USB and go on to 
install the rerst from the netwok.
