Actually, it strikes me that gdm may be making up for a deficiency eleswhere, providing something that's missing. When my wife starts up a separate gnome session, the problem still exists for her window, but not for my simultaneous session through gdm. I'd like to file a bug report, but have no clue what package is responsible.
