The installation allows reasonable flexibility, e.g. xbase-clients does
not have to be installed on the machine with the server. So unless you
choose the desktop task from tasksel, you are going to have explicitly
install some other packages to get X + window-manager working. From
memory, (risky I know) for Sarge, It was 'x-window-system'
'xbase-clients' plus of course 'xserver-xfree86'.

Don't forget to check that your /etc/apt/sources.lst entries point to 
etch and not testing, otherwise you may end up with a broken system once
etch goes stable.
