My problem here is that I have two identical computers, except that one is running Sarge and the other Etch. Same drive, same flash revision, same everything. Sarge has no problems recognizing that the disk is not blank, but Etch does.

I wound up using Sarge to completely blank the disk (i.e. not a "fast" blank, but blanking every sector) and then I could write to it and see it in Etch.

This kind of thing doesn't make me feel warm and groovy about upgrading the rest of our machines to Etch...
