I did file a bug, and the pausing was solved by changing a line in /etc/default/rcS from CONCURRENCY=shell to CONCURRENCY=none If I changed it to the other possible value of "startpar", booting stalled altogether. I'm only guessing here, but as both forms of boot-script concurrency have worked for me in the past, perhaps having them set here is incompatible with insserv?
