Atheros chips are suported by the Madwifi driver (non-free repo); try
doing:

aptitude install madwifi modules-assistant
m-a prepare
m-a a-i madwifi
modprobe madwifi

Broadcom chips are supported by the in-kernel bcm43xx driver; my
internal Broadcom AirForce One (Acer AS3690) seems to work fine with
kernel 2.6.18-4-686. Note that you do need firmware; aptitude install
bcm43xx-fwcutter, and answer yes when debconf asks about downloading
firmware.
