Sorry I missed your post and thanks for the info. I'll keep this in mind for when I have run into a problem that I can reasonably hope has a chance of being fixed. As to this pcmcia issue, as mentioned elsewhere, I really think it's not just a problem with the etch installer but rather an issue with pcmcia support in recent 2.6 kernels that amounts to support for this particular NIC having been discontinued. And since it was a popular model a few years ago, I am not event sure replacing it by a different brand/model would fix the problem. Unless someone more knowledgeable addresses this problem, it looks like the only way I can upgrade is retiring this laptop and acquiring one that has a regular non-pcmcia NIC.
