I got Debian Etch on my Compaq M2000 laptop with Intel i915 chipset and
just tested connecting an external monitor.
One FN+F4 got the display only on external monitor.
Another FN+F4 got the display on both laptop screen and external monitotr.
I have the default X config that is configured automatically during install.
My xorg.conf :
