Indeed, I looked for freetype related bugs in the bug list for openoffice and found these: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=385798 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=378619 The fix for this has been added to the experimental 2.1 packages and I can confirm that it takes care of my problems with OOo.
