I've been trying to get Compiz to run on my Debian Sid system. This is
the setup:

 % lspci|grep idia
 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV44A [GeForce 6200]
(rev a1)
 % dpkg -l compiz\*
 Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
 | Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
 |/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
 ||/ Name           Version        Description
 +++-==============-==============-============================================
 ii compiz 0.2.2-1 OpenGL window and compositing manager
 ii compiz-core 0.2.2-1 OpenGL window and compositing manager
 ii compiz-gnome 0.2.2-1 OpenGL window and compositing manager - GNOM
 ii compiz-gtk 0.2.2-1 OpenGL window and compositing manager - Gtk
 ii compiz-plugins 0.2.2-1 OpenGL window and compositing manager - plug

I've followed the instructions at [1] to configure Xorg with AIGLX and
it seems it's working:

 % grep -i aiglx /var/log/Xorg.0.log
 (**) Option "AIGLX" "true"

When I run

 % compiz --replace

from the command line metacity's decorations disappear but nothing comes
in their place and the windows are left without frames/title bars. The
mouse pointer is still functional, but when moving it into the terminal
where I started compiz it disappears. None of the windows are
responsive to the mouse. When switching to the console and back my X
screen is all black, though the mouse pointer is still visible.

Any pointers to what the problem might be and how to solve it would be
very appreciated.

/M
