From the context of the original question, it seems that you are
rather new to Debian (pardon me if the assumption is incorrect). So my
recommendation is to try (after you've done all of the above) to
install a desktop environment such as gnome or kde, as opposed to
simply a window manager.
apt-get install gnome
or
apt-get install kde
should be ok for now.
