I don't know about home-rolled kernels but in Etch stock kernels OSS is depreciated in favor of alsa. Install all the alsa packages and run alsa-config. Then again, Etch also uses udev to get the right modules loaded for your hardware. Don't know how that works in Sarge. Good luck.
