I have just restarted my computer after having been away for a few days and the display has come up in 640x480 mode and that seems to be the only option. I have NOT changed xorg.conf so my guess is that it was a recent upgrade of the video driver or some other xorg server things that have made this happen.
the relevant part of xorg.conf Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Device "Intel 965G" Monitor "PLE430" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 1 Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800 x600" "720x400" "640x480" EndSubSection ... (different depths 4,8,15,16 in here, all the same otherwise) SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800 x600" "720x400" "640x480" EndSubSection EndSection looking at Xorg.0.log I get the following lines which I think explains that it cant find these modes. (II) I810(0): PLE430: Using default hsync range of 28.00-33.00 kHz (II) I810(0): PLE430: Using default vrefresh range of 43.00-72.00 Hz (II) I810(0): Not using mode "1280x1024" (no mode of this name) (II) I810(0): Not using mode "1152x864" (no mode of this name) (II) I810(0): Not using mode "1024x768" (no mode of this name) (II) I810(0): Not using mode "832x624" (no mode of this name) (II) I810(0): Not using mode "800x600" (no mode of this name) (II) I810(0): Not using mode "720x400" (no mode of this name) (II) I810(0): Increasing the scanline pitch to allow tiling mode (640 -> 1024).
