What happens if you try to run it with MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 firefox or MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 iceweasel ? I can access Gmail fine in Debian Sid using Iceweasel (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061024 Iceweasel/2.0 (Debian-2.0+dfsg-1).
