I too have noticed a huge slowdown in speed. For me everything is slow. (I have updated from Sarge Xfree to Xorg and running a 2.6.17 kernel) If you put exec <slow-application> in .xsession and then run startx is it still slow? If you are running a display manager you will need to disable it first.
