Can't help you with the hardware, but I recently ripped all my CDs (I didn't count but it's well over a hundred). I used a commandline tool "ripit" - it does everything, even fills in the tags. It allows you to choose your ripper (cdparanoia or cdda2wav) and your encoder (lame, ogg, flac - even all of them if you wish to have say mp3s for the iPod and oggs for your PC). It required a little user interaction - start the script, then OK the suggested track info from cddb, although I think that can be done via the conf file.
