Well, to that end, the Titan VSCOM cards use a Silicon Imagae 3112 chip
(I think - either ways, a supported one).  Workes lovely.  This is the
SATA-I card though.

Another card, if you're looking for proper raid, is the Adaptec SATA
Raid card.  They use the usual aacraid driver (you might have to update
the driver/kernel for it if you get a new model), they perform really
well.
