On reflection, I had the same problem recently. Apparently a keymap issue because it disappeared when I abandoned the locale I was trying to use. It may have been a GB utf8 keymap or an italian one. Unfortunately, I forget the details and never solved the problem in spite of trying a host of suggestions for Option lines in xorg.conf.
