Etch is near release. aptitude, synaptic, etc., tell you how many files are to be upgraded for a particular request; so you can change "/etc/apt/sources.list" to point to the Etch repository and ask for a "dist-upgrade" -- but do not answer "yes" when asked for permission to proceed.
