You can blacklist modules to keep them from being loaded. If I remember
correctly that is done via /etc/hotplug/blacklist.d/ in Sarge. (You do
not mention which branch of Debian you use; the version of evolution in
your email header suggests that it is Sarge/Stable.)

Check the XFree86 log for error messages and warnings by running

egrep '^\((EE|WW)\)' /var/log/XFree86.0.log
