Fido (the tech, not just the net) is a completely different technology in that it doesn't need the ether, it isn't unified, it is something that anyone can participate in and there's really no central location. All you need is a nodelist and you're off. SSMTP over non-standard ports? How about a direct call to drop off encoded mail packets. You kinda skip the 10-20 routers inbetween when you do it that way. ;)
