I sometimes use the 'shred' command, typically like this : $ shred -uz top_secret.txt or $ shred -uz top_secret/* I guess then as you say a rm -R top_secret would do away with the directory nicely too. Not quite what the OP wanted I guess (shred) but it works for me. HTH. Regards, Pete.
