I don't know about the printer but for the pop-message you could put the
following lines in the relevant startup file.
xmessage ""&
PID=$(ps ax|grep xmessage)
wait $PID
For gdm that is /etc/X11/gdm/Xsession

Additional, I have canon printer ip 1200, where can I
find the driver? My Canoscan Lide 25 scanner also need
a driver. I use etch.
