I tried to work the problem out this way: I installed the Sarge base system, then with `apt-cdrom add' I added the 6 Etch DVD's to sources.list, then did 'apt-get update' and then `apt-get dist-upgrade'. Do you Debian users think it's all right? But now, X won't start. I installed x-window-system and gnome, but when I do: `$ startx' I get the error message: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- xauth: creating new authority file /home/rodolfo/.serverauth.1158 X Window System Version 7.0.0 Release Date: 21 December 2005 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.0 Build Operating System:Linux 2.6.12-1-686 i686 Current Operating System: Linux hda7-hyundai 2.4.27-2-386 #1 Wed Aug 17 09:33:35 UTC 2005 i686 Build Date: 16 March 2006 Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. I'm not expert enough to know what to do now. I tried with: # dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 , but nothing happens. Any suggestions?
