If you use Gnome or Kde, there is a sound daemon that prevents you to open the sound device. If this is the case, you must turn off the sound daemon while you are playing : - - esdctl standby for Gnome (package esound-client), - - something similar for ARTS/Kde (artsctl standby ???). Then you should hear the sound with Quake 3. You can test if you have a sound daemon with : "ps aux | grep esd" or "ps aux | grep arts"....
