Have you added root to the passdb.tdb file yet?  (smbpasswd -a root)  This is necessary to be able to authenticate as root.  You may need to change the root password (smbpasswd root) to match the real root password and you may need to enable root (smbpasswd -e root). I wish I could help you more, but all the Samba experience I have is from reading about it, I'm still saving money to build my Debian machine! :) --Daniel S.
