Just compiled 2.6.18 yesterday. My command was
fakeroot make-kpkg kernel_image
I did not notice any problems.

I upgraded kernel-package to the latest Sid and the problem went away.
Why it happened I could not say, but looking at the code: it's no
playground for amateurs ;-)
