i haven't done any customisation and interestingly enough I don't have this file instead there is :

nano /home/anthony/.gtk

.gtk-bookmarks     .gtkrc-1.2-gnome2 

could this explain the prob?

Do you have any font customisations in the various ~/.gtkrc* files? If
so, try commenting them out.

Do the three apps issue any complaints when you start them from the
command line?

BTW, you've got some duplicate FontPath entries above. Ensure that the
lines ending with ":unscaled" occur before the corresponding lines
without. This is unlikely to be relevant to the problem at hand, though.
