Have you seen the font books of Donald Knuth, author of TeX? They are (1) Computer Modern Typefaces, (2) The METAFONTbook, and (3) METAFONT: The Program. These are part of a five-volume set -- Millennium Edition, which included The TeXbook and TeX: The Program -- which was published by Addison Wesley.
