I got bit the other day by unstable's xserver-xorg bug, and now I
can't seem to recover from it. I've now got things so completely
horked that I think it's best just to purge all of X11 from this box
and do a clean install of X (not of Debian itself, just of the X
Window System bits).
Problem is, nothing I do will completely purge it. aptitude
(command-line and menu) fight me. I keep telling it to purge all of
the X11 system and it keeps saying that'll break things so let's
update things instead. NO!!! I want to PURGE the thing!!!
I just did
$ dpkg -P --force-depends xserver-xorg && apt-get install xserver-xorg
to my machine. It purges xserver-xorg despite the dependencies and
immediately reinstalls it, writing a new xorg.conf file. [1]
If that's what you want...
Arg! This is like dealing with Microsoft!! (apologies to you Debian
maintainers; y'all usually do such a great job, but this is really,
really frustrating)
I think someone should fix bug really soon. It really strained my nerves
before I found above solution.
I only use my laptop occasionally, but guess which day I picked to
update....
I assumed there was a video driver issue, so I fired up the desktop,
which I hadn't booted since upgrading it earlier, to find out what
was wrong...
I made a mess of the laptop by trying to remove the offending -core,
which took several other things, one of which I didn't notice. I got
it back eventually, and hindsight showed that a single dpkg -i would,
and did, fix the problem, restoring the desktop instantly.
