http://debian.org has a section called "Getting Started" where you can find both the software and installation instructions. Some laptops require a little extra work to get working, so you may also want to check out http://www.linux-laptop.net/. It does not matter much which packages you install as you can always change it, and the installer itself gives you a few choices based on what you may be using the machine for. In this community there is an implicit expectation that you try to solve your own problems by using the wealth of resources available on the Internet before asking for help. If you do that, and you are stuck then you will find that people are more willing to help you when you ask for help.
