Mouse detection isn't the real problem; by now it is correct, and I know my mouse device is /dev/psaux and I have the correct settings in backup xorg.conf files. My outstanding problem is the screen resolution - I am not offered any possibility to set 1024x768, even though I was running it fine before the upgrade. Also, when I purge and reinstall xserver-xorg the scripts ask me the identical set of questions three times.
