Clive, indeed this might be a reason but so why to freeze under a 'end current session' request ? I would accept this pseudo-freeze during a shutdown as the fan might run few seconds or minutes until the motherboard / CPU reach a cooler temperature to avoid any damage. Also this feature should not be related to any OS but only to BIOS / hardware implementation as ideally the CPU should not run to allow efficient refreshment and so should be documented by Acer as nice feature. (note: I didn't check this into the Acer documenttaion but might worth a look). Note: I'll have a look at HotPC / HotCPU as you mentionned.
