Volatile vs backports

Obvious noob question - What is the difference for a Sarge user, between 
Debian volatile vs backports for things like clamav and spamassassin?  My 
sources.list includes volatile for these things, but reading the backports 
site, it sounds like a similar idea...??  Tnx - John
