Okay, purging and reinstalling CUPS let me print again. This makes the third time I've had to do that in a month. Not a good record.
Installing msttcorefonts had no effect on printing from Acrobat Reader, but it DID allow me to print the page correctly from xpdf. Apparently xpdf silently substitutes fonts when the required font isn't present, which threw the layout off. Should I file a wishlist bug, requesting that xpdf suggest msttcorefonts, given that PDF creators including the US government assume everyone uses Windows and has Arial?
