Hi Mike,
Gnu systems(eg. Debian Gnu/Linux) are layered. There is the 'console'
that was called 'Dos in the old days. This is probabbly what you are
using at the moment. In Gnu, there are many console programs to: browse
the web and download file. A common web browser I like is 'links'. To
install in use 'apt-get install links' as root. This will browse the web
in 'text-mode' and will not show graphics and thus will be faster. If
you want a modern experience, you will want to install X windows and a
Desktop environment. This could be done like this:
apt-get install x-window-system gnome gdm
or
apt-get install x-window-system kde kdm
and when you finish this installation, you can reboot your computer to
get a 'full' windows expereince. Also, you can install the firefox web
browser which is what most folks like me like. do 'apt-get install
firefox'. After that you may need to install some extras to use flash
and other multimedia files.
cheers,
Kev
